Azteca Negra is a culturally-conscious line of textile, handmade jewelry, accessories, and novelty pieces. Azteca Negra is where indigenous and modern art, fashion, and culture intersect. All pieces are original designs and crafted using handpicked, cultural textiles, natural beads, and 100% upcycled leather. Azteca Negra believes that it is important to conserve our resources, and uses upcycled/ reclaimed and eco-friendly crafting materials when possible.
About the Artist
Marisol Catchings is an Afro-Latina, fiber and textile artist, entrepreneur, and cultural practitioner who hails from the San Francisco Bay Area. She is the owner and creator of Azteca Negra, a brand that celebrates the beauty of Afro-Latin influence and identity through vibrant, handcrafted jewelry, hair and fashion accessories, and home décor.
Marisol is best known for her colorful, fashionable art pieces, and most recently for her community-centered, Masks for Healthcare Campaign. In collaboration with her mother, Norma Saavedra, the pair donated more than 500 handcrafted face masks to healthcare and frontline workers, farmworkers, school children, and the elderly in 2020. This community campaign gained national recognition and was featured by CNN, NBC Latino, Telemundo, and many other online publications.
It is Marisol’s passion to create positive reflections and representation of Afro-Latin, Black, and Latin cultures within fashion, art, and entrepreneurship.
